Now that Jenni's Ugly Chocolates have won a state-wide award, maybe Jenni Farrow of Greenville should consider a more regal moniker for the handmade gourmet confections she creates in her home kitchen.

Jenni's bonbon-style chocolate called Sweet Potato Crunch earned first place in the Food and Beverage category for the Made in NC Awards with Our State magazine, sponsored by Mast General Store. The awards were announced today.

"I was a finalist last year," Jenni said. The second time was the charm for her Ugly Chocolates.

Just what are her Sweet Potato Crunch chocolates?

"It's my dark semi-sweet chocolate filled with a creamy sweet potato filling," Jenni said in an email. "In addition to local roasted sweet potatoes, it has a hint of cinnamon, a bite of bourbon and a kiss of (Greene County-made) Covington's Sweet Potato Vodka for smoothness. It's on a bed of crunchy toasted pecan and toffee bits."

Our State magazine notes, "Whether these chocolates are 'ugly' is debatable; what’s not is that they’re delicious!"

Jenni's other hand-made chocolates include Bourbon Balls, Kahlua Fudge, Black Chocolate Raspberry, Chili Pecan Chocolate Bar Pieces, Smoked Toffee, Espresso Chocolate Bar Pieces, and Dark Chocolate Caramel.

Jenni said making chocolates is "my mad kitchen hobby.'

As she notes on her Facebook page, "I'm a stay at home mom and photojournalist. While pursing work as a freelance photographer when the kids are in school, my brain needs more! More creativity, more stimulation, more ... CHOCOLATE."

Jenni sells her Ugly Chocolates at Uptown Greenville's Wednesday Umbrella Markets -- she'll be at the final market of the season, from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29. The market is held at Five Points Plaza, the parking lot at the corner of Fifth and Evans streets.

On Saturday, Aug. 25, you can also find Jenni and her Ugly Chocolates from noon-4 p.m. at the Uptown Craft and Vendor Market at Uptown Brewery, 418 Evans St.; and then at the Crafting Dreams fundraiser from 6-10 p.m. at Tapped650, 650 E. Fire Tower Road, Winterville.

Patrons also may make purchases through the Jenni's Ugly Chocolates Facebook page; at The Thrifty Gifter, 132 S, Main St., Washington, NC; and seasonally at Tapped650.

"I do not currently have a storefront or a web store. This is adapting as we are adjusting to this rather large bump in notoriety!" Jenni said.

"Maybe one day we'll make this into a real business in a proper setting."
