Sup Dogs plans rooftop addition
Sup Dogs restaurant announced this morning on its Instagram and Twitter platforms that an extensive remodel is in the works for its Greenville location, 213 E. Fifth St.
The rendering for the renovations depicts the addition of an upstairs outdoor dining area accessed by two exterior staircases.
A press release from Uptown Greenville states, "The expansion will include the addition of 1,200 square feet of rooftop dining, full bar, and a new rooftop kitchen."
Construction will begin in February and the new rooftop is expected to open in the summer. The restaurant will maintain its regular business hours during construction.
Owners Bret and Jenny Oliverio considered opening a third location of Sup Dogs, the Uptown Greenville press release notes, but instead decided to "reinvest in their original location, which has been open for nearly a decade."
Sup Dogs specializes in creative preparations for all-beef hot dogs, burgers, cheesy tots and cocktails in a high-energy atmosphere. Business Insider ranked Sup Dogs as the 15th Best Hot Dog In America.
Sup Dogs was founded in 2008 by Derek Oliverio, who envisioned a funky restaurant serving hot dogs with his signature Sup Sauce, Sup Crush frozen cocktails and a lively vibe.
The location at the edge of the Greenville business district closest to East Carolina University was perfect for his concept -- and it quickly became a downtown hangout attracting both students and local residents.
When Derek died in a house fire in 2011, his older brother Bret Oliverio decided to relocate to Greenville with his wife Jenny to take over Sup Dog's operation and continue Derek's dream.
Sup Dog's opened a second location, in Chapel Hill, in 2014.
