Greenville Panera Bread to relocate to new building

A new free-standing Panera Bread location is under construction in Greenville's University Square shopping center, on Southeast Greenville Boulevard on a parcel of land in front of Publix and Bad Daddy's Burger Bar and across from the Greenville Mall.

The new restaurant is larger than the current Greenville location less than a mile away on Southeast Greenville Boulevard. That restaurant will close when the new one opens.

The new restaurant, which will have a drive-through window, is slated to open in mid- to late December.

Panera Bread is a counter-serve bakery/cafe chain serving sandwiches, soups, salads and baked goods in a warm and casual atmosphere.

Greenville's original Panera Bread location, at 518 SE Greenville Blvd in the La Promenade shopping center, opened in 2003. The restaurant was owned and operated by Durham-based Breadwinners at the Triangle.

In April of this year, Panera was acquired by JAB, a privately held investment firm that also owns Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and coffee brands Caribou Coffee, Keurig Green Mountain and Peet's Coffee & Tea.

Panera Bread has about 2,000 locations.
