The J.H. Rose High School varsity girls' tennis team raised $2,000 at its fourth annual Ball Drop 50/50 Raffle Fundraiser Oct. 17 at the school's tennis courts on Arlington Boulevard.
A Greenville Utilities crew assisted with the Ball Drop by releasing numbered tennis balls from a bucket truck onto the tennis court. When the bouncing tennis balls came to rest, the one closest to the target earned its ticket-holder half of the raffle money.
The cancer benefit also included a doubles tournament with members of the Rose High School girls' tennis team paired with friends who don't play tennis.
The event was created in 2014 by Rose alum Breanna Alligood to raise money for Liz Upton, a Rose teacher who lost her nine-year cancer battle over the summer.
Ms. Upton was a teacher for Pitt County Schools for 30 years and was the Rose tennis coach.
The 2017 ball drop was led by seniors Emma-Blake Byrum, Frances Reed and the entire Rose Tennis team. The money will benefit the Liz Upton Scholarship Fund and the Liz Upton Relay for Life team.
