Blackbeard Coffee Shop and Roastery opens Sept. 23

Coffee lovers will have a new spot to savor a cup of specialty java in downtown Greenville, beginning this weekend.

Blackbeard Coffee Shop and Roastery will open its doors at 203 E. Fifth St. at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23. The full-service coffee shop is in the former location of Campus Cookies, downtown between Reade and Cotanche streets.

Freshly roasted coffee will be prepared and served by baristas. The menu also will feature quick-service food options, house-made baked goods and loose leaf teas.

Patrons will be able to choose from a wide variety of hot and cold specialty coffee beverages -- cappuccino, espresso, americano, cortado, latte, caramel macchiato, affogato and more -- brewed in a variety of ways, from drip and French press to pour-over and cold brew.

And Blackbeard's will roast high-quality green coffee beans in small batches by hand on site daily.

“It will be an interactive setup where you can see what we’re doing, from roasting to preparing coffee,” co-owner Mike Fox told Uptown Greenville for a press release. “We want people to see and understand what goes into roasting and brewing.” Fox and business partners Brooks Lindblad and Matt Sterling are coffee aficionados who decided to fill the need for locally roasted coffee themselves. They bought a roaster and some green coffee beans in 2015.

They have made a name for themselves in Greenville, providing coffee to local restaurants including Christy's Euro Pub, Dickinson Avenue Public House and Fire American Tavern. They've also been selling bags of coffee online and at some local shops.

The new coffee shop will not only provide a space for roasting the beans but also a community gathering space for locals and students to savor their favorite coffee drinks and try new ones.

. “Coffee is one of those unique things that allows people to come together and creates community," Fox said in the press release. "I think it fits in with a lot of what other businesses are doing in Uptown Greenville, spaces where people can be together and do life.”

Hours are 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays.
