Texas-style comfort food is found at Greenville's Mr. Tims
Tim Smith brought a bit of Texas with him when he moved to Greenville from San Antonio. He shares it with diners at his new restaurant, Mr. Tims Texas Style Comfort Food at 1218 Mumford Road in the former Venter's location. His interpretation of Lone Star specialties includes "famous Texas" chicken fried steak smothered in cream gravy, mesquite smoked beef brisket, fried catfish, and liver and onions. Smothered steak is a beef cutlet, lightly breaded, grilled and smothered in mushrooms, onions and brown gravy. The menu also includes hamburger steak, fried or grilled pork chops, and beef tips over rice. Entrees, which are $12 each, are served with a choice of two sides including buttered corn, fried okra, macaroni and cheese, and buttered sweet yellow squash. Accompanying each dish is a fluffy homemade yeast roll. Sandwiches, which are $9 each, include hamburgers on a homemade hamburger bun; BLT on buttered Texas toast; and ham and cheese on a homemade bun. Each sandwich is served with thick steak fries. Desserts include homemade German Chocolate cake, Italian Creme Cake and Carrot Cake. Coca-Cola products are served, along with iced tea, coffee and lemonade. Lone Star State-style breakfasts include huge Texas size pancakes ($4 for one and $6 for two), chicken and waffles ($7), homemade biscuit and gravy ($6), and Huevos Rancheros with a choice of bacon, ham or sausage and hash browns or grits ($7.50). A Texas omelet, for $12, is made with bacon, ham, sausage, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, cheese and jalapenos. Breakfast tacos, $2.29 each, feature a choice of potato and egg, bacon and egg, ham and egg or sausage and egg, served on a homemade flour tortilla. Sides include hash browns, grits, gravy, ranchero sauce and mild salsa. An all-you-can-eat fruit bar is $9. A Mr. Tims specialty is an iced Texas Cinnamon Roll that covers an entire plate. The restaurant's decor has a Texas touch, as well, with a Texas flag painted on a wall at the entrance, Longhorn steer antlers, and photos of The Alamo, a field of Bluebonnet blooms and a road runner bird. Mr. Tims is open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays. Call 252-689-6217.
