South Central students raise money for athlete's medical expenses

The family of a South Central High School athlete who recently recovered from a lengthy illness was presented with a $1,500 check to assist with his medical bills.
Caleb Woodley, a 10th grader who was starting quarterback on the school's junior varsity football team in 2016, was diagnosed with encephalitis in January of this year. He spent the last three months at Greenville's Vidant Medical Centerl, with many of those days in the Intensive Care Unit.
Caleb's sister, Samantha, is a 9th grader at South Central who plays on the junior varsity softball team.
The check was presented to the Woodley family of Winterville after the South Central JV softball game April 4.
"Our 9th-grade SGA officers worked together with the student body to raise $1,500 for the family's medical expenses," South Central High School School Nurse Case Manager Megan Thomas said in an email. "SCHS administration supported our efforts by allowing students to participate in a non-uniform day with a $1 donation.
"We were so excited that Caleb is healthy enough now to join us at the game."
