PirateFest set for April 7-8 in Greenville

Pirates -- and wannabe pirates -- will gather in downtown Greenville April 7-8 for the 11th annual PirateFest. The spring street festival will include a free all-ages concert by Rusted Root, a pirate encampment on the Town Common with demonstrations, a grog garden, a pirate costume contest for kids (and dogs) of all ages, pirate entertainers, carnival rides, arts and food vendors, BMX shows and live mermaids. Acoustic fusion band Rusted Root, whose song "Send Me On My Way" has a cult following, will perform at 5 p.m. April 8 at the Town Common Amphitheatre, 100 First St. along the Tar River. Opening act, Rebekah Todd and The Odyssey, will take the stage at 3 p.m. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on. The free concert is presented by Pepsi and Minges Bottling Group. Other free activities include kayak rides on the Tar River, rides in a Greenville Utilities bucket truck, an inflatable pirate ship for children and a fossil dig. The festival is organized by Uptown Greenville, Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge, The City of Greenville, Greenville Convention and Visitor' Bureau and East Carolina University's Volunteer Service-Learning Center. Friday, April 7 * 5-8 p.m.: Buccaneer Bash with live music by Purple Masquerade: A Prince Tribute Band, at the Rose's lot on the corner of Fourth and Evans streets * 5-9 p.m.: Carnival rides at Five Points Plaza, corner of Fifth and Evans streets. Ride all night with a $20 wristband.

Dress like a pirate and join the parade.
