Greenville's Pelican's SnoBalls opened for the 2017 season March 1 -- and a new icy treat has been added to the menu: ice cream-stuffed SnoBalls.
That's right, fluffy flavored shaved ice with a smooth and creamy center.
"The 'Stuffed Snoballs' with ice cream in the middle are straight from the New Orleans area," said Eric Wischhusen, the East Carolina University alum who owns Greenville's Pelican's location with his two brothers. "We are doing Vanilla, Chocolate, Cookies & Cream, and Butter Pecan."
The seasonal stand, which opened in April 2016 at 1122 S.W. Greenville Blvd., offers traditional snowballs with shaved ice so thin and fine that it feels dry to the touch. A mound goes in a cup and then it's drizzled with a flavored syrup. Then another mound of fluffy shaved ice goes on top of that, and it's molded into a round sphere and more flavoring is drizzled on.
A Pelican SnoBall melts in your mouth; there's no grainy ice to chew. And the ice absorbs the syrup, so the flavor stays intense all the way through until your cup is empty.
Flavors include Butterscotch, Mango, Egg Custard, Fireball, Grape, Guava, Orange, Pink Bubble Gum, Peach, Dill Pickle, Red Velvet Cake, Coffee, Sweet Tart and Toothpaste. Toothpaste?
The flavors can be mixed and matched, punched up with sour spray or made velvety smooth with cream. And then there are toppings like Hershey's Chocolate, marshmallows,sweetened-condensed milk, sprinkles, whipped cream, Nerds and Chamoy -- a sweet and spicy Mexican fruit sauce. Regular and sour Gummies also are available for a topping treat, including Gummy worms, butterflies, frogs, sharks and dinosaurs.
Patrons order and pick up their treats at walk-up windows, accessed by ramps. There's seating at outdoor picnic tables.
"We have hired a great staff this year, with most of our employees being students at either ECU or Pitt.," Eric said.
Pelican's Snoballs is open from noon-9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 1-9 p.m. Sundays, rain or shine. And Pelican's will travel off-site for events and parties.
