The D.H. Conley High School Varsity Cheer Squad is the best in the state.
The Greenville cheer team earned first place at The North Carolina Cheerleading Coaches Association State Competition on Jan. 14 at Apex Friendship High School in Apex.
"This is not the first state championship for (Conley's) Varsity Cheer, but it has been quite some time," coach Jessica Jackson said. "This is my fifth year coaching varsity, and it's a first for me.
"This year we were fortunate enough to add a second varsity coach to our team, Stephanie Lynch. Stephanie has a lot of experience with choreographing cheer routines.
"We used material from our Coach's Clinic, Summer Camp and did a lot of research. We focused on difficulty, creativity, and maxing out score sheets. We also used feedback from previous competitions."
Squad members are Lexi Anderson, Carlie Baker, Kailee Bennett, Kayla Cannon, Abby Dixon, Jada Garnett, Kaitlyn Glynn, Ciana Groccia, Georgia Hayes, Jemeila Hilliard, Kaitlyn Johnson, McKaleigh Manning, Faith Miles, Hannah Rostar, Tyreel Simpson, Isabella Taylor, Lillie Taylor, Peyton Vinson, Nichole Watkeys and Devin Willhite.
The team received a trophy, banner and team T-shirts.
"Right now our trophy and banner are displayed in the main office at school," Jackson said. "At the end of our season, we will move them to the trophy case in our new Gym Commons area."
