Lunch on the patio - Cubbies
Wish you could take a quick trip to the beach? You can, when you have lunch on the covered patio at Cubbie's on Arlington Boulevard.
Sit back in the shade, feel the breeze (the oscillating fans will provide it if the weather doesn't cooperate), pretend that the traffic on Arlington is the sound of the waves (if you close your eyes, the cars really sound like the ocean!), sing along to some classic North Carolina beach music and order a sandwich and soft drink created in eastern North Carolina. The shrimp burgers served at Cubbie's are the southern Outer Banks' version of a New Orleans Po' Boy: a steamed bun, a heap of hot fried shrimp, a layer of fresh coleslaw and a squirt of ketchup. You'll need a couple of paper towels torn from the roll on the table. And ask for a plastic fork to scoop up everything that falls out of the bun and onto the plastic basket the shrimp burger is served in.
Order a fountain Pepsi to accompany it. Created by a New Bern pharmacist, Pepsi is a sweet, dark bubbly drink, and Cubbie's serves it on crushed ice. Pepsi tastes best outside in eastern North Carolina. That's a fact.
Cubbie's owner Dean Barrow grew up in Morehead City and opened Cubbie's in Greenville in 1984.
