"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."
The Jackie Robinson Baseball League began its 25th season on Saturday, June 18 at Eppes Recreation Center and Thomas Foreman Park with opening ceremonies and a game between the Phillipi Eagles and Morning Glory Thundercats.
North Carolina State University head baseball coach Elliott Avent was the guest speaker.
Here are some excerpts from Avent's speech to the baseball players:
"To have something that is this successful and that is going to impact the lives of 13 teams ... 169 kids are going to be impacted the rest of their lives."
"Embrace this opportunity."
"I played for the Blue Optimists. I had a uniform, I had a field to go to and I had teammates. It's something I'll never forget."
